Day 20- The Kansas Drive
Hey it’s the last group but certainly not the least: the Grumpy Gang! We’re coming to you from Manhattan, Kansas (also known as the longest cornfield EVER). The grumpy group consists of Amanda Plaster, Blaine Lewis, Landon Roseberry, Makayla Finger, Madelyn McLain, Gracie Hine, Emmy Letts, Lauren Hooks, Kathryn Cupp, Conner Griffin, Trevor Prevette, Keenan Baker, and Haley Coppo. Last night, 3 or 4 BATS invaded our campsite at Colorado College!!! This basically meant mass chaos, which then lead to many people not getting much sleep. Others were a tad bit nervous about the bats so they slept in the hallway, even with the bright lights on. Dallas was attacked by a bat and by attacked we mean she had a close encounter along with many others who also had personal experiences with the recklessly flying mammals!
This morning we had yet another wonderful wake up call from counselor
Dallas after sleeping in till 7 am! We were treated on the bus with the sounds
of screaming and annoying songs as payback for staying up late. Later, for the
first time on this trip, we got to watch movies on the bus! The movies viewed
were The Sandlot, the Goonies, and both Paul Blart Mall Cop 1 & 2. All of
us on the bus must have gained TOO much weight from pizza last night, because the
back axle of the bus was overweight at the weigh station in Kansas. We ended up
being stuck at the station for about an hour after lunch while the vans waited
at a rest area a few miles down.
Miss America on the other hand had quite the adventure… Turns
out the van had a few problems to be fixed. The
entirety of Carolina Girl was loaded onto the already packed bus, while
Counselor Kent drove the now vacant van to rescue the unlucky Miss America
crew. The addition to the bus depleted the little bit of personal space we had,
but we made it work. Counselor John (dad) attempted to solve the problems at
the Ford dealership and see how long it would take to fix the van. Three of our
group members (Gracie, Emmy, and Haley) were lucky enough to enjoy the wonders
of the dealership. The Miss America crew had fun talking and bonding on the
sidewalk outside of the dealership making friendship bracelets and enjoying the
complementary popcorn and assorted beverages. Meanwhile the counselors worked tirelessly
to find a way to transport both the food in the Miss America trailer and the
van riders to the campsite. The Miss America riders (who later became the
Carolina Girl riders) began their trek to the campsite. They arrived over an
hour later than the bus. The 13 Miss America, later Carolina Girl riders, were
welcomed warmly with cheers and hugs from the bus riders after an almost 12
hour drive. Everyone is safe and the van will be fixed very soon!!
We had fun bonding moments on the bus in the meantime,
whether it was playing card games or cracking up about Mall Cops 1 and 2! Johnny G may have enjoyed the Mall Cop movies
more than all of us on the bus, as he could hardly take breaths between
laughter! Today was an adventure for all
of us, whether it was from Miss America’s van problems, the bus’s problems, or
just the pure adrenaline rush of seeing an oil rig up close and countless corn
fields (because that’s all there is in Kansas.)
We love you guys! See you soon!
